Ireland Road Trip : Beginners and keen amateurs

September, 22 – 27, 2012 (Circa £500)

Ireland’s south coast has been the focus of a revival in recent years due to its amazing scenery, secluded drives, and hospitable people. We plan to make a photographic trip by rented car from Dublin down through Waterford, Cork and wander around the Ring of Kerry on the Beara Peninsula, before heading up to Galway just in time for the annual Oyster Festival! We shall be staying in comfortable bed & breakfasts, and run our usual photography classes with emphasis on personal development and photographic style.

We shall be returning to Cuba in 2012, and strengthening our portfolio of images obtained this year. Havana’s charm lies in its glorious buildings, side streets and crumbling tenement blocks, its light is almost always perfect, and its people are obliging. More details to come.

MOROCCO DISCOVERY Photography Workshop : For beginners and keen amateurs

March 17 – 25, 2012 (£1,150 pp)

Our discovery tour to Morocco will begin in Marrakesh. Staying in a lovely riad within this ancient walled city for 3 nights. A mixture of traditional singers, snake-charmers, street performers and a lively night market will astound the visitor.  We then head off to the magnificent Atlas mountain retreat of Toubkal to photograph the amazing scenery of the Toubkal National Park. Agadir, on the Atlantic coast will be our next overnight destination before driving up north to Essaouira,  the city of culture. A further 2 night here and then we head back to Marrakesh to catch our return flight. Accommodation will be in traditional riads and hotels.

Instructions will include camera handling, shooting in crowds, experimenting with daylight fill flash amongst other techniques. Topics covered are people and urban photography, landscapes and the participant will be given a free hand with guidance, in planning and photographing a personal project during the trip. Our instructors will be on hand to advice and help in the editing and presentation of your work.

VENICE AT CARNIVAL Photography Workshop

February, 16-19, 2012 (£375.00 + travel and accommodation)

This is a unique opportunity to photograph Venice during Carnevale. The low winter sun and the chilly air adds to the ambiance amongst the masked revelers, frilly dresses and costumes. Venice is transformed into a colourful medieval playground which is just waiting to be photographed. We will be staying in shared apartments in the Rialto area, and daily instruction will be given to produce a vision of Venice, in your own photographic style.

SLOW Photography Weekend : Isle of Wight

August 20-21, 2011 Completed (£250 + travel and accommodation)

Have you ever seen hoards of tourists busy snapping indiscriminately at every site they visit, photographers carrying tons of equipment strolling in the park, sniping away with their long lenses on continuous mode, point’n'shooters with their camera arms out-stretched aiming and mopping up everything they see like there is no tomorrow? Well, we have all heard of Slow Food, Slow Travel, now there’s Slow Photography.  And that is precisely what we will be doing, with a weekend workshop in the glorious but quaint Isle of Wight.

To be immersed in photography seriously demands a lot of attention, which not many people can afford the time to do so. We are all so buried in work and new technology that the process have overtaken the why’s, and basic joys of manual photography. Filling up an 8 or 16GB memory card is far simpler than shooting 12 frames perfectly, on a roll of 120 film.

Bringing back precise composition, critical framing, and exposure control is what we intend to do, photographing breathtaking landscapes, chalk cliffs, escarpments, and nature. We will also visit the seaside towns of Shanklin and Ventnor on the southern coast, to photograph the beach paraphernalia, people, coloured huts, fishing vessels, tea houses and gifts shops that give these Victorian resorts their English charm.
