Dinosaur Coast

I love this stretch of coast on the south western flank of the Isle of Wight. From Compton Chine to Brook Chine, this is where you go to find evidence of footprints and bones of dinosaurs in the Cretaceous rocks that make up the crumbly sea-eroded cliffs. It is also the spot to view amazing panoramic sunsets.

I seldom make use of my tripod, but I wanted to finish off a couple of rolls of 120 film with the Rolleiflex. Got tempted to use the M8 as well for immediacy. I am pleased with the rendition of the M-lens. Not so pleased is the noise at 640ISO on the M8 though, so these were taken at 160ISO with -1/3 stop.

SUMMER images! Did you shoot any?

explorenation is curating a set of images titled ‘Timeless Summer’ for an Autumn event to be held in London, to brighten up the days in Autumn, when the days begin to shorten, shadows lengthen, and the chill wind starts to blow again. Email me your pics now(!) to info@explorenation.net

Images can be on any subject, taken anywhere, depicting a timeless summery moment in your own interpretation. Instagrams, Hipstamatics, Fine Art, anything..

Open to all dedicated photographers, we want your SINGLE timeless image to be included in an exhibition. Photographs selected will be printed and exhibited in a special event (to be announced) where your prints will be available for sale.

Please send your jpeg at 800pixels wide in any format, B&W or Colour. We are looking for that special stand alone photograph that shout out SUMMER, eg. BBQ’s, beaches, outdoor, camping, flowers, fairs, camper vans, ice cream, bikinis,… that sort of thing!

Go on! Have a look at your images and see what you have shot this Summer.

Summerscapes

Took a stroll in Hyde Park this evening, when the late summer sun was low and setting, shadows long. Before long, Summer will turn into Autumn, so its best now to catch some summer images. Here are some images I shot over the last 2 weeks with my little Ricoh GRD2, always still astounded by it’s amazing resolution and tonality. (Click image to view larger image.)

A walk in the park

It rarely snows in London, and when it does, everyone gets excited, despite the disruption a little accumulation may cause to the transport networks, roads and airports. Perhaps it has to do with global warming, greenhouse gases and all that stuff, after all, 100 years ago, the river Thames did freeze over, and the Victorians used to skate on it. There were no skaters in sight this morning in Hyde Park however, although parts of Serpentine lake had ice. Only the coots and ducks were skating. I did see a very manky old heron, perched on a wooden stump looking very sad, and obliging to be photographed  by some onlookers not more than 10 feet away.

Last night when it was snowing, I photographed under the dim lit park next to my flat, this morning the snow had stopped falling, and the sky was overcast in grey daylight. I took a walk in Hyde Park.

Approaching storm

I captured this approaching storm yesterday on a wet and windy, freezing cold day on Shanklin beach, on the Isle of Wight. It was a pleasure to use the highly portable GRD2 again. I just love the tonality the RAW file captures, and the ability to shoot 1:1 square is a bonus.

SLOW in IOW

© Steven Lee 2011

We will be visiting and photographing the seaside towns and coastal areas of the Isle of Wight this coming weekend in what I term as SLOW Photography.  Bringing back the skill of observation, composition and pre-visualisation techniques back into our practice, instead of the ‘click, chimp, and delete’ style we are so used to nowadays in digital photography. Its August, the peak of the British Summer, so expect lots of bright and colourful beach images and dramatic landscapes.

We hope to pay a visit to Dimbola Lodge, the home and museum of one of Britain’s celebrated Vitorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron in Freshwater.

More later.

LANDSCAPES OF SILENCE by Fernando Perez

Fernando’s sublime landscape photographs are being exhibited at the flagship National Geographic store on Regent Street, in London’s West End from 18 January to 15 February, 2011. Those that know Fernando personally can attest for his cool, clean and abstract studies of the built environment, as procured by his architectural background. His landscapes series are new to me, and I very much look forward to visiting the exhibition soon. Bravo Fernando!
