Brick Lane with Yelp Elites

Spent yesterday Sunday afternoon at the Vibe Bar in hipsterville Brick Lane sharing a photography workshop session withe City Academy and Yelp Elite members. Yes, Yelp is a huge and popular online review site which organises free educational events throughout the world for their Elite members. Street Photography was the subject for the afternoon, or I would rather call it Photography in the Street, since there are so many definitions of what Street Photography is. We had around 15 members joining the session with Carol Edrich (professional Dance and Travel photographer), Zarina Holmes (Lifestyle and Travel, Design consultant) and myself.

For those that have not ventured along Brick Lane on a weekend, this is the place to hang out, with bars, street food, trinket stalls, and lots and lots of vintage stuff, some of the best curry houses in town and amazing street art  and grafitti, and did I mention all the different street food from around the world too, like Japanese, Korean, Colombian, kebabs, jerk chicken, dimsum, burgers, bagels, Thai…

The Beautiful Game begins!

The Beautiful Game begins!

The World Cup unites all nations like no other international event, apart from natural disasters, wars and conflicts which, sadly many parts of the world are experiencing today. I drive past this brick wall regularly and my attention have often been caught by the simple painted goalpost on it, which is located at a cul-de-sac.

Ironically, in Brazil, a lot of football happens a bit like this, on the street and in the favelas of the inner cities. Tomorrow, Brazil will showcase it’s spanking new stadiums and amenities, to the world’s fans, despite the reported chaos, violence and strikes still ongoing.

Hope your favourite team wins!

The Beautiful Game

Just over 40 days time the world will be transfixed once more with the FIFA World Cup 2014 starting on June, 12. With 32 finalist nations in 8 Groups, Brazil, the host country is surely a firm favourite at 3/1 odds and Spain coming second at 7/1. The World Cup unites sports fans all around the world like no other world event, and it would be a great moment of distraction from the many conflicts, disasters and wars across many regions. Promising Waters by Mila Teshaieva

Once in a while a great photo book catches my eye and last week, my latest collection came through Deutsche Post. This is a wonderfully crafted book. Promising Waters is by Ukrainian documentary photographer Mila Teshaieva, which has won several awards, including the Critical Mass Book Award 2012, PDN Photo Annual 2013 and NPPA Best of Photojournalism 2013 Portrait Series.  The book itself is hardcover with a silkscreen print, with 52 colour images printed on archival pigment ink on Harman by Hahnemühle 300gsm Matt Cotton Smooth paper. This limited edition book of 75 comes in a bespoke hardcover case along with two editioned A4 prints.

My acquisition of this amazing book has a two fold interest. Firstly, it was put up by Mila to raise funds for  Rhonda Wilson of Rhubarb Rhubarb, who is on a road to recovery following a debilitating illness. Rhonda is a well known figure in UK contemporary photographic circles, and have keenly initiated many social programs and exhibitions to promote the art in Great Britain over the last 10 years. She has worked tireless to help many emerging photographers hone and promote their skills along their career paths in the industry. I met Rhonda in 2008 in London when she asked if I could be a portfolio reviewer in an event called Cultivate.  The funds raised would help Rhonda return to normal life and I’m glad to have been part of her appeal, from which Promising Waters had been put forward, so generously.
